About Our Leading Lady

Elder/Dr. Sylvia Lewis Hathaway

Our Leading Lady, Dr. Sylvia Lewis Hathaway is a native of New Kent, Virginia. She is married to our senior pastor, Dr. Milton A. Hathaway and they are the parents of four children, Rodney (Tamika), Randy (deceased) and Angela. She is also a proud grandmother of six, Jordan, Joshua, Julia, Alyvia, Jamison and Jarred.

Dr. Hathaway is a former first lady of Union Hope Baptist Church of King William, Virginia and Second Liberty Baptist Church, Quinton, Virginia. She is also a past president of the Richmond chapter of the International Association of Minister's Wives and Minister's Widows and serves on several international committees. She is a tireless worker in our church and community who leads by example. In 1968, she was one of the original plantiffs in the U.S. Supreme Court decision, Green vs the School Board of New Kent, Virginia that helped end segregaton in schools in America resulting in Freedom of Choice for all students. She would later return to teach in the New Kent school system. Although retired, her passion still remains connected to her community and our church. From managing food programs for seniors to planning the annual County Fair, to encouraging students as a substitute she is truly our Leading Lady.

She graduated from the public schools of New Kent and did undergraduate and post-graduate studies at Virginia State University, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Ashford University, receiving her bachelor's degree in Home Economic/Textiles and Clothing, master's degree in Education and Supervision, and P.H.D. degree in Education.
